The Australasian Farmers' & Dealers' Journal reports a late-season boost lifted winter crop production to 37.8 million tonnes, about 6% above the ten-year average. Western Australia reached 14.6 million tonnes, while Victoria and South Australia fell 25% and 38% from the record 2016-17 crop.
Grain sorghum plantings are up 26%, with an expected 1.5 million tonnes output.
Regional divergence means Western Australian supply is ample while eastern states are short, which affects where feed grain buyers source and where basis moves. Sorghum growth may partly offset tighter barley supply.
