The Baltic Exchange's Baltic Dry Index changes will make the index tradable for the first time, Index Council officials said. From March 1 the smallest ship segment (handysizes) is dropped and weightings of the three largest classes are altered.
A tradable freight index gives investors a way to bet on dry bulk shipping rates, which can add financial interest to ocean grain freight costs, though it has little direct effect on feed grain prices.
