The Army Corps of Engineers reopened the main 1,200-foot lock at Melvin Price Locks and Dam 26 on March 8 after more than two months of repairs. During the closure, barge tows had to split and pass through the smaller auxiliary lock, causing backups on the Mississippi River.
With the main lock reopened, barge congestion on the upper Mississippi eases ahead of spring grain shipments, which supports barge freight rates normalizing and reduces delivery delays for Midwest corn and soybeans.
