Alberta feed barley prices rose to $220-225/t in early 2018, up sharply from $136/t a year earlier, while feed wheat reached $219-225/t. Better 2017 yields, export demand, the lower Canadian dollar and the wheat-barley spread narrowing all contributed to the rally.
Feed barley is now priced near feed wheat and malt, which raises costs for Alberta feed buyers and shifts substitution decisions toward corn or wheat.
