Grain Producers Australia says farmers are frustrated that feed-grade barley is later sold internationally as food or malting grade without the higher value passing to growers. Grain Trade Australia says the feed price already includes a premium and is discussing renaming feed barley as general purpose barley.
The dispute over barley grading and pricing could shift acreage toward other crops if growers do not capture the higher-value use. Any change would affect how barley is priced.
