Three months of on-off French rail strikes, launched in protest of a planned SNCF reform, have crippled train services on strike days. Grain exporters are using trucks and barges as backup, and Rouen-based Senalia has received no more than half its scheduled trains.
Exporters fear that shipments could be diverted to other countries if the stoppages persist.
Lost or delayed loadings at French ports could shift EU grain export business to competitors such as the Black Sea, supporting wheat and barley prices. Higher trucking and barge costs also raise the cost of moving the crop to port.
After 283 past bullish logistics events, Wheat (SRW) moved a median -0.2% over 5 sessions (46% higher; middle half -1.4% to +1.3%), and -0.1% over 20.
