A tow of hopper barges loaded with corn and soybeans broke apart and struck Lock and Dam 11 in Dubuque, Iowa, on May 4, temporarily closing the lock. The lock reopened the next day, and two sunken barges remain upstream outside the shipping channel.
The incident caused only a short closure, but it adds to the backlog of river delays during high water, modestly tightening barge capacity and supporting freight rates.
