Vietnam's State Bank set the reference exchange rate at 22,602 VND/USD on June 19, the second-highest level this year, after a rise over recent sessions. Officials attributed the move mainly to the dollar's rally following the US Federal Reserve's rate hike and to other currencies in the central bank's basket strengthening.
A weaker dong makes Vietnamese feed and agricultural imports costlier in local terms, while the firmer rate can support exports. The effect on grain and meal prices is modest because the move is small.
