Stifel's maritime update says U.S. coal production and domestic consumption keep falling, while coal exports rose to 10.1 million metric tons in April, the highest monthly total since March 2013. First-half coal exports are up nearly 24% year over year, with about 80% of global coal exports bound for Asia.
Stronger coal export flows lengthen ton-miles and absorb barge and vessel capacity, which can support freight rates for dry bulk, including grain movements. The effect on grain prices is indirect.
