Sixteen barges broke free after a towboat struck a pier of the Old Highway 80 Bridge in Vicksburg, Mississippi, during high water in March. The Coast Guard closed the river between miles 429 and 436 until the barges were recovered.
None of the barges were reported damaged and no pollution was reported.
River closures at high water can briefly halt grain barge traffic, but this incident was short-lived and occurred in March. Its price impact is minimal now.
