Researchers at the Technical University of Munich reported using gaseous CO2 as a basic material for producing methionine in a biotechnical reaction. Methionine is widely used in animal feed, and about one million tons are produced annually.
The process was published in Nature Catalysis and could replace the current petrochemical production route.
If the enzymatic process reaches industrial scale, it could reduce the cost of making methionine from petrochemical inputs. Feed buyers should treat this as a longer-term downward pressure on methionine prices.
