The Technical University of Munich reported a first use of gaseous CO2 as a feedstock for producing methionine through an enzymatic reaction. Methionine is an essential amino acid used widely in animal feed, with about one million tons produced worldwide each year.
The results were published in Nature Catalysis and developed with support from Evonik.
If scaled, the process could replace the six-step petrochemical route that uses hydrogen cyanide, which would change long-run methionine cost and supply. That is a future cost signal for feed formulators, not a near-term supply shock.
