The State Bank of Vietnam set its reference rate at VND22,669 per dollar on July 31, 2018, up VND10 from the previous day, and local banks followed with higher rates. The dong has weakened to its lowest level in years, and the dollar is up 2.6% against the dong since the start of the year.
A weaker dong raises the local cost of imported feed ingredients priced in dollars, such as soybean meal and corn, which can lift Vietnamese feed costs even as global prices are steady.
