Private railroads will rebuild the 128-year-old Merchants Bridge over the Mississippi in St. Louis, at a cost of $172 million. The Terminal Railroad Association will finance the project with Bank of America Merrill Lynch after failing to win a federal grant, with work starting this fall over four years.
The bridge is a key rail link in St. Louis's freight network, so its renovation reduces the risk of future disruption to grain rail and barge transfers. The effect on grain prices is minimal in the near term.
