EPA approved sorghum oil as an eligible feedstock under the Renewable Fuel Standard. Ethanol plants that extract oil from grain sorghum can now sell it to biodiesel producers.
The approval is expected to add about 21 million gallons of ethanol-equivalent fuel to supply.
A new biofuel outlet gives sorghum an additional demand channel and can add a few cents per bushel for ethanol plants paying growers. The volume is small, so the price effect is modest.
