Drought in northern Europe has cut barley harvests in Germany, Poland, the UK and Scandinavia, with German barley forecast down 18.8%. Experts expect a shortfall of around 500,000 tonnes of malting barley in the EU, while a decent French crop may partly offset the gap.
A drought-driven EU shortfall in feed and malting barley tightens supply and lifts malting premiums, which typically pulls in South American imports to fill the gap. Prices for feed barley and related grains are likely to firm unless the French crop fully compensates.
