Merchants in Ireland are paying up to secure green barley at harvest, with prices reaching €175/t and reports of undried barley trading above €182/t and farmer-to-farmer sales at €190/t. Fewer spring barley acres and more area cut for wholecrop have reduced the grain available, and early yields are below last year.
Tighter domestic supply and expectations of higher imported feed wheat and barley prices after the turn of the year support firm feed grain prices for Irish buyers. Competition at harvest suggests the cheapest grain may already be behind them.
