Highly pathogenic avian influenza was reported in Russia and Taiwan in the past week, with five new Russian outbreaks among small backyard flocks. Russia's total since mid-June reached 33 outbreaks affecting about 488,000 birds, and the disease was found in a new region, Smolensk.
Outbreaks in Russia are small and mostly backyard, so supply impact is limited for now. The spread to new regions raises the risk of larger commercial losses that would tighten poultry supply.
