Nutrien, the world's largest potash producer by capacity, has idled capacity, including 8.1 million tonnes of unused capacity, to help lift potash prices. The company plans to use that idled capacity to keep prices from rising so far that BHP, which is weighing a Jansen mine in Saskatchewan, enters the market.
Curtailments remove supply and support potash prices, while the threat of BHP's new capacity caps how high Nutrien can push them. The price outlook therefore hinges on how much supply the market expects to be added.
