The Philippine agriculture secretary recommended importing an extra 132,000 tons of rice by the private sector to address tight supplies in southern provinces. The National Food Authority council was set to consider the request.
Additional Philippine import demand would support export prices in Vietnam and Thailand, the main suppliers, which have already shipped over 1 million tons this year.
