A USDA APHIS study reviewed egg production and mortality records from five case farms and two control farms for six months before H7N9 detection in US broiler breeder operations in March 2017. Two highly pathogenic infected farms showed sudden mortality spikes just before testing positive.
Three low-pathogenicity farms showed production drops and mortality increases before positive tests.
The findings may help identify early warning signs of avian influenza, which could reduce the scale of future culls and their effect on poultry supply. Near-term price impact is negligible.
