The U.S. Coast Guard issued a low water safety advisory for the Lower Mississippi River from Mile 167.5 to Mile 303 Above Head of Passes. The advisory followed the Baton Rouge gauge falling to 12 feet and still dropping.
Vessels were told to adjust cargo loading, draft and tow size to shallowing channels.
Reduced draft forces barges to carry lighter loads, which tightens barge capacity and raises freight costs for grain moving down the river. That supports barge rates and adds to basis pressure on corn and soybean exports.
