FreightWaves launched SONAR's 'Panama spread' index, which subtracts the China-to-US West Coast container rate from the China-to-US East Coast rate to track the relative attractiveness of each port range. The expanded Panama Canal has shifted container volumes toward East Coast ports, which recently overtook West Coast volumes.
The index tracks container freight economics rather than grain bulk flows, so its direct effect on feed grain and meal prices is minimal.
