Start-up Planetarians is commercialising a plant-based protein flour made from upcycled defatted sunflower seed meal. The company says the ingredient is much cheaper than soy protein.
It debuted the product at the IFT trade show in Chicago in July.
This is a small food-ingredient venture that uses sunflower oilcake, a minor byproduct. Any effect on sunflower meal demand would be negligible at current scale.
