Sumitomo Chemical held a ceremony on Thursday to mark completion of its new feed additive methionine plant in Niihama City, Japan. The line can produce 100,000 metric tons per year, raising the company's methionine capacity to 250,000 tons.
The company will use its global sales network and its ITOCHU distribution partnership to sell the added output.
The added methionine supply could weigh on amino acid prices for poultry and livestock feed. The market's growth of about 6% a year will determine how fast the extra tonnage is absorbed.
