Adisseo and the French biotech group TWB say they have found a biological route to methionine, which is now made from petrochemicals. Adisseo plans to develop a pilot operation by 2020.
Evonik, a competitor, acquired a biobased methionine route from Metabolic Explorer last year.
A biobased route is a long-term development and will not affect methionine supply or prices in the near term. It may matter for future production costs and feedstock exposure.
