Cargill plans to shut its Narrabri crush plant by the end of November because it will run out of cottonseed in mid-October. The 25 workers at the plant are expected to be made redundant.
Cargill said the plant was unprofitable because of changes in the cottonseed market and high Australian food-manufacturing costs.
The closure leaves northern NSW without local cottonseed crushing, cutting meal and hull supply to feed buyers. Feed users will have to source CSM from farther away or use alternatives, which tends to lift local prices.
