Cargill announced closure of its Narrabri cottonseed crushing plant in northern New South Wales, due in November. The plant had reportedly been unprofitable, citing competition for whole cottonseed from the feed market and high energy costs.
Feed customers had already been disrupted when expected cottonseed meal and hull supplies failed to materialise in August.
Losing a local cottonseed meal source tightens Australian supply and pushes feeders toward whole cottonseed or other protein meals, supporting prices for those substitutes.
