California confirmed three more cases of virulent Newcastle disease in backyard flocks and a Los Angeles County live bird market, and markets in the area were cleaned and disinfected. Low-pathogenicity avian influenza was also found in four flocks in Stanislaus County, and a 10-kilometer surveillance zone was set up.
The outbreaks are localized and mostly involve backyard and small flocks, so the effect on commercial poultry supply and prices is likely minimal unless the disease spreads to large commercial operations.
