Irish farm-input reporting says fertiliser prices for next season are rising even as crude oil has fallen to around $60 a barrel. Nitrogen prices have risen most, driven by tight global ammonium nitrate supply, and European CAN ex-factory prices are up nearly €50/t year on year.
DAP is up €50/t, potash is up €30/t, and sulphur premiums have doubled.
Tight nitrogen and phosphate supply plus strong grain-driven demand point to higher fertiliser input costs for farmers in 2019, regardless of the drop in energy prices. This keeps upward pressure on crop production costs and feed-grain margins.
