BVSC forecasts the Vietnamese dong will depreciate by 3% at most against the dollar in 2018, or about 2% in its softer scenario. The dong has already fallen 1.3% this year, in line with weakness in regional currencies such as the rupiah, rupee and won.
A managed dong depreciation of this size modestly raises the local cost of imported feed grains and meal. Government intervention limits the risk of a sharp move.
