USDA's APHIS approved Texas A&M's ultra-low gossypol cottonseed variety TAM66274, which keeps gossypol out of the seed while preserving it in the rest of the plant. The project was funded by Cotton Incorporated and aims to make cottonseed usable as human food and higher-value feed.
Lower gossypol seed could eventually expand cottonseed's use in food and feed, but commercial supply is years away, so there is no near-term price effect.
