Hurricanes Florence and Michael and fall rains damaged cotton fields across the Cotton Belt, but the USDA's November 8 estimate of 18.41 million bales yields about 6.2 million tons of cottonseed versus 6.4 million in 2017. About 3.9 million tons is available for dairy feeding versus 4 million last year, and cottonseed prices remain relatively stable.
A small reduction in dairy-available cottonseed supply is largely offset by stable prices, so the impact on feed costs is limited; producers are advised to consider locking in feedstuff prices and watch quality issues.
