Rabobank's latest Global Animal Protein Outlook forecasts stable fishmeal and fish oil output in 2019 and prices staying within a US$1,100 to $1,500 per tonne range. The bank cites a lack of El Niño and good Peruvian anchovy biomass that lifted 2018 supply, with the first Peruvian season's 3.3 million tonne quota 92 percent landed.
The second 2018 season quota is forecast at 2.2 million tonnes.
With supply expected to hold steady and prices capped in a defined range, fishmeal costs for aqua and animal feed buyers are unlikely to spike absent a climate shock. Alternative protein ingredients gaining ground are seen as too small to shift fishmeal prices.
