At the South Dakota Soybean Association's Ag Outlook meeting, Prairie AquaTech's CEO said a plant near Volga, South Dakota, will open in spring 2019 to make soy-based aquaculture feed. The plant will convert about 50,000 tons of state soybean meal into 30,000 tons of product, which he says sells for about $1,500 per ton against roughly $400 per ton for meal.
The project creates a new higher-value outlet for soybean meal, which could add modest regional demand. The effect on national soybean meal prices is likely small at this scale.
