Morocco's state-owned OCP Group, which controls about 31% of global phosphate reserves, has spent an $8bn investment programme since 2008 to expand mining and fertiliser output. The company reported 2017 turnover of €4.3bn and aims to double phosphate mining and triple fertiliser production by 2020.
It has also flattened mine waste heaps and planted trees near Khouribga.
The expansion targets greater export flexibility across phosphate rock, phosphoric acid and fertiliser, which could add supply to phosphate markets over time. The article describes background strategy rather than a new supply shock, so the near-term price effect is limited.
