The State Bank of Vietnam raised its dollar buying rate for commercial banks by VND500 to VND23,200 per dollar effective January 2, its first adjustment since February 2018. The selling rate was kept at VND23,463.
The daily reference rate was also nudged up to VND22,828 on January 3.
The move signals the central bank is shifting toward buying dollars to rebuild reserves, which tends to firm the dong and modestly lower the local cost of dollar-priced feed imports. The effect on commodity prices is small.
