Michigan State extension educator George Silva reports that all fertilizer types cost more at the end of 2018 than a year earlier, based on the Illinois Production Cost Report. Anhydrous ammonia is up 18%, urea 10% and UAN 23% year over year, with urea at $392 per ton.
Higher nitrogen input costs raise grain and forage production expenses, which can weigh on farmer margins and feed crop planting decisions. The price effect on feed grains is modest unless fertilizer costs rise further.
