Bangladesh's poultry industry asked the government to lift its ban on MBM imports and sale. Industry members said fishmeal, the alternative, would raise production costs by about 10 percent.
MBM costs $500 to $600 per tonne versus $1,200 to $1,350 for fishmeal.
The lobbying shows the ban is still contested, and a reversal would restore MBM demand while easing fishmeal demand. Until then, buyers in the region face the higher-cost fishmeal substitute.
