Net losses at DTN's hypothetical 50-million-gallon ethanol plant in southeast South Dakota narrowed to 29.7 cents per gallon in January from 37.9 cents in December. The improvement came from a rise in the price received for dried distillers grains, which reached $160 a ton from $125 in September.
Ethanol rack prices were $1.36 per gallon, with corn at $3.78.
Higher DDGS prices support feed-ingredient costs for livestock buyers, while ethanol margins remain weak enough to keep plant idlings and cutbacks in play.
