The St. Paul District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers released its 2018 lock and dam statistics. The 2018 Upper Mississippi shipping season opened April 11 and closed December 1, and Lock and Dam 10 recorded 3,231 combined lockages against a 10-year average of 3,376.
Lower lockage counts on the upper river point to somewhat weaker barge throughput than normal, which can keep barge freight rates soft for grain shipped from the upper Mississippi.
