Barley prices drifted lower over the past week to a level believed to be at export parity for the first time in months. Western Australian barley stockpiled in Brisbane is being bought in volume for Darling Downs feedlots, and the discount to wheat has widened to about $50-55/t.
Barley now competes well with wheat and other feed grains, which should slow the price slide, though Chinese buying is unlikely soon and a Saudi tender could lift values.
