A University of Illinois analysis finds ethanol plant profitability was squeezed in 2018 by the lowest ethanol prices in a decade, RFS policy setbacks, and resistance to a year-round E15 waiver. DDGS prices were a bright spot, but total revenue of $1.75 per gallon was slightly below 2017.
Weak ethanol margins reduce plant run rates and corn grind, which softens corn demand. Stronger DDGS prices partly offset the squeeze for feed buyers.
