OCP Group plans to expand its seawater desalination plant at Jorf Lsfar from 25 million to 40 million cubic metres a year by 2021, at a cost of more than €78.4 million. The expansion is needed because OCP intends to raise phosphate production capacity, which would increase its annual water needs from 63 million to 160 million cubic metres.
The planned capacity increase points to more phosphate and fertiliser supply from Morocco in the coming years. This is a long-term supply signal rather than a near-term price driver.
