The State Bank of Vietnam is continuing a roadmap to tighten foreign currency credit in 2019. Firms may no longer borrow short-term foreign currency to pay for imports used domestically, and medium and long-term foreign currency lending for offshore payments ends September 30.
The central bank also targets ending foreign currency lending by 2030.
Tighter dollar credit can raise financing costs for importers of feed grains and meal, which may slow purchases or push buyers toward VND borrowing. The effect is gradual and modest for near-term prices.
