Container carriers are increasingly confident they can fully recover the higher costs of the global low-sulfur fuel mandate through annual trans-Pacific contracts. One study estimates added costs of up to $265 per FEU from Asia to the US West Coast and $700 per FEU to the East Coast.
If carriers recoup these costs through contracts, container freight rates would rise after the mandate takes effect. The effect on bulk grain freight is less direct.
