A new study commissioned by the Global Aquaculture Alliance and IFFO examines Thailand and Vietnam, two large Southeast Asian producers of seafood for food and feed. It finds that fisheries investment in the 1960s to 1980s raised fishing effort and that fishmeal and aquaculture grew quickly, using low-value trawl catch.
Fish for fishmeal makes up a small share of the catch.
The study is about fishery reform and data gaps, with no new supply or demand shock, so its direct price impact is minimal.
