Australian barley prices have firmed to parity with or above wheat as eastern feedlots and stockfeed millers switch rations from wheat to barley. The shift follows earlier weak WA port offers and the China anti-dumping action that hit barley in the 2018 harvest.
Feedlots in Queensland and New South Wales are now pricing barley out as far as September.
Renewed domestic feed demand for barley absorbs supply that might otherwise have been exported, supporting local prices. The switch also means more wheat demand is lost in the feed market.
