Peru announced a 2.1 million ton quota for the first 2019 anchovy fishing season in the north-central coast, with the season starting May 4. The quota follows IMARPE research showing the north-central anchovy stock rose to 7 million tons in early April with high juvenile presence.
The minister also said new fishing rights will apply in the second season.
Anchovy is the main raw material for fishmeal, a key protein ingredient in aquafeed and livestock feed, so the quota size sets global fishmeal supply. A quota within a large, growing stock points to ample supply and softer fishmeal pricing.
