North Carolina State and NCDA&CS researchers are running a four-year study on nitrogen rates to grow higher-quality malting barley locally. Currently most North Carolina barley goes to animal feed, priced around $2 per bushel, compared with $8-$12 per bushel for malting barley.
The study is funded by a $104,695 grant.
This is a small regional agronomy project with no near-term effect on global feed grain supply or prices, since most barley remains feed-grade.
